== Setup ==
Our main physical server is located in a data center in The Netherlands and is owned by [[User:Lennart]]. Its address is <code>nl1.dlnet.org</code>.

The server runs Linux Containers. Each user has a container with a full Debian installation. The user containers only have an IPv6 address, unless they pay for an IPv4 address. Therefore, all services (HTTP, SMTP and IMAP) are proxied via <code>mail.dlnet.org</code>.

<code>mail.dlnet.org</code> also does spam checking for incoming mail and is responsible for HTTPS encryption. Its outgoing email is routed via Amazon Web Services. This is necessary, at the moment, because large email providers like Google have a tendency to mark emails as spam that come from servers with low sending volumes. Outgoing mail with an empty envelope sender (autoreplies and bounces) goes directly to the recipient's MX.

<code>backup.dlnet.org</code> is a dedicated server hosted by OVH (France). Its only purpose is to temporarily store incoming email when <code>nl1.dlnet.org</code> is down.

== List of software ==
This is an incomplete list of software that is used to run the DLNET.ORG Cloud.

* The [https://www.debian.org/ Debian] operating system. The main servers run Debian stable. The user containers run either Debian oldstable or stable. All systems have daily automatic security updates from the Debian security team.
* [https://linuxcontainers.org/ Linux Containers].
* [https://www.ansible.com/ Ansible] automation software.
** [https://kolab.org Kolab Groupware].
** [https://roundcube.net Roundcube] webmail.
** [https://www.cyrusimap.org/ Cyrus IMAP].
** [https://deluge-torrent.org/ Deluge] torrent daemon and WebUI.
* The mail server (mail.dlnet.org) runs:
** [https://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/ amavisd-new] mail content scanner.
** [https://www.exim.org/ Exim] mail transfer agent.
** [https://www.dovecot.org/ Dovecot] IMAP server.
** [https://httpd.apache.org/ Apache] web server.
** [https://spamassassin.apache.org/ SpamAssassin] spam filter.
** [https://www.onlyoffice.com/ ONLYOFFICE] document server.

== Server capacity ==
* The server's CPU is a hexacore Intel Xeon E5-2630 V2. There is a possibility to add an extra CPU if needed.
* There is currently 24GB of RAM installed. It is possible to add up to 384GB ram.
* The server has two 2TB SATA drives in software RAID.
** In case the HDDs become a bottleneck, I will install two SSDs used for OS data, VPS'es and incoming mail. The HDDs will store files, archived mail and media.
* We have a 100 Mbps uplink.

__FORCETOC__
Email forwarding used to be common, but in the age of spam it has become very difficult to forward email in a reliable way. Hence, it is not recommended to use forwarding (see [https://www.tidbitsfortechs.com/2018/06/email-forwarding-is-bad-why-you-should-never-forward-email/ this blog post]). I strongly recommend to not rely on email forwarding for a primary email address. In some cases it can be useful to forward email from a single address that attracts little spam. If you are migrating from an old email address (e.g. Gmail) to a DLNET Cloud address, I recommend to set up forwarding as described below.

== Forwarding mail for a cloud address to an external address ==
In [[webmail]], go to '''Settings''' -> '''Filters'''. The middle pane contains a list of filters. At the very top, you can select a filter set (make sure it is enabled). To add a forwarding filter, click '''Create''' in the right pane. Then add the forwarding filter as described in the picture below.
[[File:forward.png|border]]
* For '''Filter name''', choose a name for the filter.
* Under '''Rules''', select '''To''' in the first drop down box and '''contains''' in the second drop down box. The third field contains the email address which you want to forward.
* Click the '''+''' symbol in the rules section to create a second rule. In the first drop down box, select '''...'''. In the field following it, enter "X-Spam-Flag". In the second drop down box, select '''contains not'''. In the field following it, enter "YES".
* Under '''Actions''', select '''Redirect message to''' in the first drop down box. Or, if you want to keep a copy of the message in your inbox, select '''Send message copy to'''. In the field following it, enter the address to which you want to forward.

It is recommended to not forward spam email because, first, it is harder for the receiving mail provider to identify forwarded spam as spam, and second, our server's reputation can be damaged as a result of forwarding spam.

== Forwarding mail for an external email address to a cloud address ==
When forwarding email to your DLNET Cloud it is recommended to forward spam as well. The spam filter recognizes forwarded mail as likely spam if it is forwarded to an address containing "+spam". The following instructions are for Gmail.

* Go to your Gmail settings, and select the tab '''Forwarding and POP/IMAP'''.
* In the box labeled '''Forwarding:''', click '''Add a forwarding address'''. Enter your DLNET Cloud email address, but add "+forward" to the portion of your email address before the @. So, if your address is "name@yourdomain.com", add "name+forward@yourdomain.com" as forwarding address. You will be asked to verify it.
* Repeat the same procedure, but now add "+spam" to the portion of your email address before the @. So, if your address is "name@yourdomain.com", add "name+spam@yourdomain.com" as forwarding address.
* In the '''Forwarding:''' section, select '''Forward a copy of email to''', and choose the "+forward" address in the drop down box. Then click '''Save changes''' at the bottom of the page.
* Again in Gmail settings, go to the tab '''Filters and Blocked Addresses'''. Click '''Create new filter'''.
* In the field after '''Has the words''', enter "is:spam", like in the picture below. Then click '''Create filter'''.
[[File:Isspam1.png|border]]
* In the next dialog, select the checkboxes '''Forward it to:''' and '''Never send it to Spam'''. In the drop down box after '''Forward it to:''', select your email address containing "+spam". Then click '''Create filter'''. See the picture below.
[[File:Isspam2.png|border]]
* Notify [[User:Lennart]] about the email address you're forwarding, so the spam filter can be appropriately configured.
== What to do in case of downtime ==
If you cannot reach your email or other services, the server may be down. There is no need to worry: any email sent to you will be received by the backup server, and the issue will usually be quickly resolved. Prolonged downtime is very rare, but if it happens, feel free to contact [[User:Lennart]]. If the server is down you can reach me at my backup email address, lennart@ackermans.info.

== Philosophy and technical information ==
DLNET.ORG Cloud is inspired by a [[philosophy]] of being owner of your data. See [[Server information]] for technical details about our setup.

Lennart: /* Forwarding mail for an external email address to a cloud address */

__FORCETOC__
Email forwarding used to be common, but in the age of spam it has become very difficult to forward email in a reliable way. Hence, it is not recommended to use forwarding.

Enter your DLNET Cloud email address, but add "+forward" to the portion of your email address before the @. So, if your address is "name@yourdomain.com", add "name+forward@yourdomain.com" as forwarding address. You will be asked to verify it.
Encryption

Lennart:

Encryption is the future of data security. It can be used to store your data in a way that it can only be read by yourself (or those having the private key), and not by others that have access to the data. And it allows to communicate with others in a way that only the conversation partners can read what is said, not the servers that forwards the communication.

Encryption is also used by servers to securely communicate with clients (such as your phone and PC) and other servers, using the SSL protocol (when combined with HTTP, widely known as HTTPS). This form of encryption effectively prevents eavesdropping, but it does not provide security against hackers, governments and malicious internet service providers.

This page discusses ways in which you can implement [[Wikipedia:client-side encryption|client-side encryption]] and [[Wikipedia:end-to-end encryption|end-to-end encryption]], which is superior to the aforementioned server-side encryption.

== Email encryption ==
The best way to implement end-to-end encryption for email is using [[Wikipedia:Pretty Good Privacy|Pretty Good Privacy]] (PGP). PGP works only if both you and your email partner have installed the required software ''and'' you have shared your public keys. There are various plugins for email applications that implement PGP. In Thunderbird, you can use the plugin [https://enigmail.net Enigmail]. For Outlook, you can use [https://www.gpg4win.org/ Gpg4win].

PGP is also supported by the [[webmail]] client. For this to work you first need to install the browser plugin [https://www.mailvelope.com Mailvelope], and import your PGP keys (or create new keys) into Mailvelope. See [https://kolabian.wordpress.com/2015/10/10/mailvelope-integration-pgp-encryption/ this page] for some configuration instructions.

To read encrypted mail, you may need to change a setting in Roundcube. Go to '''Settings''' -> '''Preferences''' -> '''Encryption'''. Then turn on "Enable message decryption".

Roundcube also has a builtin PGP system, but I recommend against using it because it runs on the server, and hence is not true end-to-end encryption. However, the benefit of the builtin system is that you don't need to install the Mailvelope plugin to use PGP features.

=== Client-side storage encryption ===
Client-side encryption of stored emails (as notably offered by [[Wikipedia:protonmail|ProtonMail]]) is not currently supported. However, the benefits of such encryption are largely illusive. A malicious entity with access to the server could change the internals of the server to store a non-encrypted copy of all emails elsewhere. The only way to avoid this is with true end-to-end encryption (see PGP above).

=== Criticism of PGP and the limitations of email ===
PGP has been heavily criticized because it is cumbersome to use – and as a result, has seen very little adoption – and because it does not provide [[Wikipedia:Forward secrecy|forward secrecy]]. The limitations are inherent to email, which is based on protocols from the 1980s. It is unlikely that email will ever become a truly secure medium of communication. Those who need true cryptographic security combined with usability should opt for messaging apps like Signal.

== File encryption ==
[[ownCloud]] does not currently support client-side encryption. However, you can encrypt your own files locally on your PC. An easy way to do this is with [https://cryptomator.org/ Cryptomator]. Cryptomator allows you to encrypt a folder before it is uploaded to the cloud. A downside is that you won't be able to access your encrypted files in the ownCloud app for mobile devices. You can, however, use the Cryptomator app and configure it with Webdav to connect to ownCloud.

The ownCloud user manual can be found [https://doc.owncloud.com/server/latest/user_manual/ here].

You can download the desktop synchronization app [https://owncloud.com/desktop-app/ here]. Apps for iOS and Android are available [https://owncloud.com/mobile-apps/ here]. You should set the server address to '''cloud.yourdomain.com/owncloud'''.

You can access your ownCloud via the web interface as well, at '''<nowiki>https://cloud.yourdomain.com/owncloud</nowiki>'''.

Your ownCloud files are also available in the webmail interface (Roundcube), where you can add them as attachments to emails. For this to work, it is recommended to keep the password of your owncloud account the same as your email account.

== The media directory ==
The files in the directory '''media''' are accessible by all other ownCloud users on your installation, by [[PLEX]] and by [[Deluge]]. It is recommended to use this directory only for media you want to stream with [[PLEX]].

== ownCloud versus Nextcloud ==
Nextcloud is a fork of ownCloud that has become more popular in recent years. I decided to use ownCloud because upgrades are smoother in ownCloud, making it easier for system administration.

Nextcloud has recently (August 2020) started offering client-side encryption in its Desktop and mobile app (but not in the browser), which ownCloud does not yet offer. Owncloud desktop users can still locally encrypt their files with Desktop applications such as [https://cryptomator.org/ Cryptomator] (see [[encryption]]). However, this is not as user-friendly as Nextcloud's builtin solution. If Nextcloud continues to improve on its client-side encryption feature and ownCloud does not develop one I will switch to Nextcloud.

__FORCETOC__
Email forwarding used to be common, but in the age of spam it has become very difficult to forward email in a reliable way. Hence, it is not recommended to use forwarding.

Enter your DLNET Cloud email address. You will be asked to verify it.
* Repeat the same procedure, but now add "+spam" to the portion of your email address before the @. So, if your address is "name@yourdomain.com", add "name+spam@yourdomain.com" as forwarding address.
* In the '''Forwarding:''' section, select '''Forward a copy of email to''', and choose your DLNET Cloud email address in the drop down box.
Kolab offers synchronisation of calendars, contacts, notes and tasks. The supported protocols are CALDAV, CARDDAV and Microsoft ActiveSync. On most devices, you can choose whether you want to synchronize your calendar using CALDAV or ActiveSync.

== Calendar and contacts synchronization ==
* On iOS, you can use CalDAV and CardDAV. See [https://roundcubeplus.com/tutorials/CalDAV/calendar-ios] for instructions. As server address, you can just use '''cloud.yourdomain.com'''. As an alternatice, you can use Exchange (ActiveSync), see [https://kb.kolabnow.com/documentation/iphone-activesync-client-setup-guide].
* On Android, it is easiest to use Exchange (ActiveSync). See [https://kb.kolabnow.com/documentation/android-activesync-client-setup-guide]. You usually only need to enter your email address.
* In Outlook, use ActiveSync. See [https://kb.kolabnow.com/documentation/outlook-2016-over-activesync-setup-guide] for detailed information. Your ActiveSync address is '''cloud.yourdomain.com'''.
* In Thunderbird, use CalDAV. See [https://kb.kolabnow.com/documentation/configure-thunderbird-against-kolab-now] for instructions. You need to get the CalDAV address from [[webmail]].
* In Max OS X, use CalDAV and CardDav. See [https://kb.kolabnow.com/documentation/macos-via-imap-and-dav-setup-guide] for instructions.As server address, you can just use '''cloud.yourdomain.com'''.

=== CalDAV ===
CalDAV is a calendar synchronization protocol. Most clients can automatically configure it if you enter your domain '''cloud.yourdomain.com'''. For manual configuration, your need to retrieve the CalDAV URL from [[webmail]] ('''cloud.yourdomain.com/roundcubemail'''). Go to the Calendar tab, and select the calendar you want to synchronize. Then press the options button (three vertical dots) and click "Show calendar URL". It will show two links, one for read-only access and one for synchronization. When you have the link, go to your device and add a new online calendar.

=== CardDAV ===
CardDAV is a contacts synchronization protocol. Most clients can automatically configure it if you enter your domain '''cloud.yourdomain.com'''. For manual configuration, your need to retrieve the CardDAV URL from [[webmail]] ('''cloud.yourdomain.com/roundcubemail'''). Go to the Contacts tab, and select the address book you want to synchronize. Then press the options button (three vertical dots) and click "Show CardDAV URL". When you have the link, go to your device and add the address book.

== ActiveSync ==
ActiveSync is a Microsoft protocol for synchronizing email, calendars, contacts and notes, that is supported by many applications and devices. It can sometimes be configured automatically on the basis of your email address. If not, you need to enter '''cloud.yourdomain.com''' as server address.

=== CalDAV ===

=== CardDAV ===
CardDAV is a contacts synchronization protocol. Some clients can automatically configure it.

== ActiveSync ==
ActiveSync is a Microsoft protocol for synchronizing email, calendars, contacts and notes, that is supported by many applications and devices. It can sometimes be configured automatically on the basis of your email address. If not, you need to enter '''cloud.yourdomain.com''' as server address.

Lennart: /* Technical security principles */

DLNET.ORG Cloud is a not-for-profit project that aims to change to way in which people use the internet. It offers a radical alternative to the internet services offered by large companies, particularly Google. This page explains the principles on which it is based.

== Be owner of your personal data ==
Large internet providers like Google operate on a business model that is based on exploiting your personal data. You don't pay Google with money, but with your data, which it sells to advertisers. Another way to put it is: you are not the customer, but the product.

We believe that people should keep control over their personal information. That means you have to pay for internet services with money instead of data. It also means you should choose wisely to whom you provide your data.

== Decentralization ==
We are heading towards a global society in which a few companies manage the personal data of everyone. In such a situation, it is very easy for bad actors to cause damage. Data harvesting has already been use on a large scale to influence elections, for example in the [[Wikipedia:Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal|Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal]]. A lot more damage could be done if malicious hackers gain access to the data stored by these large companies; or if authoritarian governments demand access to it.

The more scattered data is, the healthier our societies. The best situation is that you are the only one with access to your data. However, such a thing is hard to arrange with many internet services like email and synchronization across your devices. Hence, we believe it is best to opt for a second-best situation, in which you share a server with a couple of people. In that case, only the server administrator and yourself have access to your data. Compare this to Google, where other companies and thousands of employees have access to your data.

== Open source software ==
DLNET.ORG Cloud runs entirely on [[Wikipedia:Open-source software|open-source software]] (see also [[List of software]]). That means that everyone can check the source code and verify that there are no security and data leaks. It also means that we benefit from and contribute to the open source community, which develops the software that makes the DLNET.ORG Cloud possible.

== Technical security principles ==
=== Being small ===
The most efficient way of avoiding hackers is by making the incentives for hackers as small as possible. The benefits, from the hacker's perspective, of hacking a small server are tiny. It is much more lucrative to go after large companies.

(Unless of course, you are a high-profile target. In that case you should take additional measure like encrypting all your data.)

=== Separation of user areas ===
If a hacker intrudes into one part of the network, they should not have easy access to the rest of the network. For that reason, each DLNET.ORG user has its own virtual private server, in which all their services run.

=== Encryption when beneficial ===
We use [[encryption]] only when it actually provides security benefits. All communication from and to the server is encrypted with SSL.

There is nothing that beats true [[Wikipedia:End-to-end encryption|end-to-end encryption]]. But that is, in the case of email, impossible to offer as a provider. We encourage users to set up client-side [[encryption]] yourself. When open source file sharing software becomes available that offers encryption and decryption in the browser, we will make it available as soon as possible.

== Email encryption ==

=== Client-side storage encryption ===

== File encryption ==

The DLNET.ORG spam filter identifies spam on the basis of publicly available blacklists and previous spam. It learns what is spam and what is not on the basis of what users have marked as spam and what they have kept in their inbox. This has implications for your privacy: see below.

== Enabling the spam filter ==
In [[webmail]], go to '''Settings''' -> '''Filters'''. The middle pane contains a list of filter. At the very top, you can select a filter set (make sure it is enabled). To add a forwarding filter, click Create in the right pane.

Fill out the form as illustrated in the image below.
* In the field '''Filter name''', enter "Spam Block" or another suitable name.
* Under '''Rules''', in the first drop down box, select '''...'''. In the field following it, enter "X-Spam-Flag". In the second drop down box, select '''contains'''. In the field following it, enter "YES".
* Under '''Actions''', select '''Move messages to''' in the first drop down box. In the second drop down box, select the folder "Junk".
* Optional: under '''Actions''', click '''+'''. In the first drop down box, select '''Stop evaluating rules'''. This will prevent other filters from moving or forwarding the spam.
* Click '''Save'''.

[[File:spamfilter.png|border]]

Please keep your Inbox tidy – move all spam to the Junk folder – so that the spam filter is learning appropriately what is spam and what is not.

== Privacy policy ==
The spam filtering software needs to read the emails in your Inbox and Spam folders to learn what is spam and what is not. Even after you've deleted these emails, the spam filter might still have a copy of them in its storage which cannot be deleted. Users of DLNET Cloud consent to this practice unless they explicitly opt out of spam filtering. Please send [[user:lennart|me]] a message if you wish to opt out.

Hi! I am the main developer and system administrator of the DLNET.ORG Cloud. DLNET.ORG started many years ago as a web hosting company. However, one-man hosting companies were never a lucrative business, so after 8 years I decided to stop accepting new customers. I discovered that there is something even more fun than web hosting: email hosting. After many years of experience with complicated email setups for myself and a couple of web hosting clients, I came to know a lot about the world of email and its main protocol SMTP. I now want to use this experience to allow others to move their personal data out of the big US companies and into a local server ran by their most trusted friend! (See [[Philosophy]].)

Lennart: /* Being small */

== Decentralization ==

== Open source software ==

== Technical security principles ==
=== Being small ===

=== Encryption when beneficial ===
We use encryption only when it actually provides security benefits. All communication from and to the server is encrypted with SSL.

There is nothing that beats true [[Wikipedia:End-to-end encryption|end-to-end encryption]]. But that is, in the case of email, impossible to offer as a provider. We encourage users to set up [[Wikipedia:Pretty Good Privacy|PGP]] themselves. We also encourage users to locally encrypt their files before uploading them to the DLNET.ORG Cloud. When open source file sharing software becomes available that offers encryption and decryption in the browser, we will make it available as soon as possible.

== External documentation ==
The DLNET.ORG Cloud makes use of open source software. See [[List of software]] for an overview. Each of the software packages used has its own documentation online. In particular, the following resources will be of use:
* [https://docs.kolab.org/ Kolab Groupware Documentation], has information on how to set up and use email, calendar and other Kolab features, but much of it is outdated. [https://kb.kolabnow.com/documentation Kolab Now] is a commercial kolab host that has more up to date information.
* [https://doc.owncloud.com/server/latest/user_manual/ ownCloud documentation], for synchronising and sharing files.
* [https://support.plex.tv/articles/ Plex.tv Support Articles].

== Decentralization ==

== Open source software ==

== Technical security principles ==
=== Being small ===
The most efficient way of avoiding hackers is by making the incentives for hackers as small as possible. The benefits, from the hacker's perspective, of hacking a small server are tiny. It is much more lucrative to go after large companies.

=== Separation of user areas ===
If a hacker intrudes into one part of the network, they should not have easy access to the rest of the network. For that reason, each DLNET.ORG user has its own virtual private server, in which all their services run.

=== Encryption when beneficial ===

__FORCETOC__
Email forwarding used to be common, but in the age of spam it has become very difficult to forward email in a reliable way. Hence, it is not recommended to use forwarding. I strongly recommend to not rely on email forwarding for a primary email address. In some cases it can be useful to forward email from a single address that attracts little spam. If you are migrating from an old email address (e.g. Gmail) to a DLNET Cloud address, I recommend to set up forwarding as described below.

== Forwarding mail for an email address to an external address ==
In [[webmail]], go to '''Settings''' -> '''Filters'''. The middle pane contains a list of filter. At the very top, you can select a filter set (make sure it is enabled).
In the field following it, enter the address to which you want to forward.

It is recommended to not forward spam email because, first, it is harder for the receiving mail provider to identify forwarded spam as spam, and second, because our server's reputation can be damaged as a result of forwarding spam.

Make sure you set up [[spam filtering]]. All set!
